Who? Townshend, Springsteen, Daltrey jam at NYC event

NEW YORK (AP) — Bruce Springsteen called Pete Townshend "the greatest rhythm guitarist of all-time," told a story about attending his first Who concert as a pimply-faced teenager and joined Townshend and surprise guest Roger Daltrey onstage for a rocking set. The rock icons attended the MusiCares MAP Fund benefit Thursday night in New York City, where Townshend and longtime Who manager Bill Curbishley were honored for their charitable efforts. Springsteen, …

After weathering the storm of a three-month marriage, I now consider myself a marriage expert.

There are many wonderful things about being married, although I can’t think of any right now. However, having a successful marriage has its benefits, such as coming home to the love of your life, and giving advice to unmarried people who don’t want it.

If you’re not sure if you’ve found the man you should marry, here are nine key signs to look for.

How The ‘Fairy Godmother Of Makeovers’ Did The Biggest Makeover Of All On Herself

Suze Yalof Schwartz, the founder of Unplug Meditation, at her studio in Los Angeles.

Imagine having your dream job. And then walking away from it — on a dare.

Suze Yalof Schwartz was named the “fairy godmother of makeovers” by the New York Times in 2001. She had carved out a powerful niche for herself at Glamour magazine, where she was executive fashion editor, and before that worked for Vogue, Elle and Marie Claire.

When she was photographed for the New York Times piece, she remembers the photographer looking at her through the lens and saying, “when I take this picture, your whole life is going to change.” And it did.

She went to the Bahamas with Oprah to do bathing suit makeovers for the show, jumped into a NASCAR pit with “Good Morning America” and one time made over a rabbi — proudly calling it “synagogue chic.” She reinvented people from 1996 to 2010 and wrote hundreds of articles for Glamour about style improvement.

oprah

But after 14 years of making over other people, she flipped the script and made over herself. She moved from the east to west coast and opened a studio in Los Angeles that is dedicated to teaching people the art of meditation.

Unlike many tales of career reinvention, Schwartz’s is not one of burnout, dwindling inspiration or soul-sucking unhappiness. It’s actually quite the opposite.

“I had the dream job of all dream jobs,” she told The Huffington Post in the back office of her meditation studio, Unplug Meditation, in Los Angeles. Schwartz radiates positive energy — she has a megawatt smile, flowing brown hair and the keen ability to always give her opinion without ever seeming pushy.

After a work trip to Los Angeles for the Oscars in 2010, Schwartz joked with her husband that they should move to the west coast. He thought about it and began to dream of raising their three children outdoors, near the ocean and in a freer environment than New York City provided.

“He dared me to be adventurous and to move. I said if you’re daring me then I’ll go, but you have to find schools for our kids and a house for us to live in. And he did!” she said. Their kids were 9, 6 and 3 years old at the time.

But when they arrived in L.A. in August of 2010, Schwartz remembers feeling lost. “I didn’t know what to do with myself,” she said. “I quit my job entirely when we moved. It was scary. But I knew he needed me to be there for the kids at first and to help the transition be better for everyone.”

After about six months (and a stint at beading bracelets that only yielded boredom), Schwartz returned to the fashion industry part time for Lord & Taylor and began to fly back and forth between L.A. and New York producing taxicab TV commercials for the brand.

Her stress levels were so unmanageable during this time period that her mother-in-law, a psychotherapist, taught her a breathing exercise to help her relax. It made such a difference in Schwartz’s ability to stay calm, that her mother-in-law suggested looking into meditation.

But when Schwartz searched on her computer for a place to learn in Los Angeles, she realized there was a gaping hole. “The choices were $ 1,400 to sit in some hot guy’s house and learn how to meditate, or a four-week program or trekking up to a Buddhist temple,” she said.

“I’m busy. I wanted to try it but didn’t want to make a huge commitment. So I told my husband I was going to open a meditation studio.”

This talent for being able to recognize what is missing and envision what should be in its place is a major part of Schwartz’s identity. It’s why she was so successful in her first career.

She was one of the first fashion editors to suggest photographing non-model women in bathing suits to show how the pieces looked on a human — not just on a mannequin. She can easily visualize how things could be as opposed to how they are.

Her husband fully supported her. But told her she should probably learn how to meditate first.

She went to group classes, learned from private teachers, listened to podcasts, and did guided meditations on YouTube. She began meditating as often as five times a day. As she learned the physical practice, she also took notes on what wasn’t working.

suze class
Schwartz with students at Unplug Meditation.

“I found that a lot of the instructors would go on and on — and I wanted to edit them. They were all basically saying the same thing but I wanted it to be delivered in a way that was less mystical and easier to understand.”

She also began noticing the effects of all the meditation she was doing. “Normally with my children, I would react in a not so nice way to something, but I was able to press my inner pause button and then respond,” she remembers. “I was able to think before I spoke. I had never been able to really do that before.”

She noticed she was calmer, too. But she said the most interesting side effect of her meditation was that she didn’t want to shop anymore. “I wanted less. I wanted more and more of less and less, as Marina Abramovic says.”

She and a girlfriend wrote a business plan at her kitchen table and opened the doors to Unplug Meditation in April 2014.

For those out there thinking Los Angeles is the last place in need of another spiritual center, you’re right and you’re wrong. L.A. has long been a mecca for drifters, dreamers and hippies. Wellness trends start there, drifting first along the coast of the Pacific Ocean before migrating to other parts of the country.

But Schwartz’s desire to make meditation — a rapidly growing interest and industry — accessible to people with busy schedules helps explain why so many have called her studio the Drybar or SoulCycle of meditation.

“What I like about Drybar is you walk in feeling icky and you walk out feeling great. And it’s a half hour. That’s how I feel about Unplug,” Schwartz said.

flowers

Meditation classes at the studio are 30 minutes long and take place morning, noon and night. The teachers have a variety of meditation backgrounds and Schwartz is always adding new classes to the schedule. The whole point is you can pop in, try it out and see how it goes. It’s exactly what Schwartz was looking for when she first started investigating the practice.

There is not one specific tradition of meditation taught at the studio. There are classes focused on mindfulness, mantra, breath work, clarity and imagination. There is a tapping meditation, a sound bath meditation and even one with live guitar music.

“In every meditation, you pick a single point of focus,” Schwartz said. “If it’s Vedic or Transcendental, it’s a mantra. In mindfulness meditation, it can be your breath or a grape. In Zen, it can be movement. You pick one single point of focus. Then you let that slip away. Then a thought or a feeling pops up — because that’s what they do. And then you notice that you’re feeling or thinking and so you bring it back to the focus point. Focus, let it go, think, notice, repeat. That’s it.”

Inside, the studio walls are white, the seat cushions are chic and every detail is edited. There are fresh flowers in clear vases, fruit-infused water and huge signs that read: “Calm,” “Stillness” and “I’m thankful for today.”

The gift shop sells stylish notebooks, glass water bottles, delicate jewelry and meditation books recommended by the teachers at Unplug. It’s apparent that Schwartz has an editorial background. But if it seems like all of it came together seamlessly, that was definitely not the case.

“I’m not a businessperson. I had an idea and was stupid enough to think I could actually do it myself. I didn’t overthink it and just did it,” Schwartz said, laughing. Her overt optimism is part of what has propelled her into such an adventure. But that didn’t instantly translate into bodies in the studio.

seats

For many months, she was one of the only students at Unplug. In some of the afternoon classes, she was literally the only person sitting with the teacher. She felt bad and the teachers felt bad.

Unplug initially offered first classes for free so that newcomers could try it out, but Schwartz says that instead of encouraging clients to come back, new students would happily use up their free class and never walk through the doors again.

“For the first six months, it was deep dive losses,” she said. “Oy-vey-what-am-I-going-to-do-with-myself kinds of losses.” Despite the fact that the studio sits smack dab in the affluent and health-conscious neighborhood of Brentwood, the price point just wasn’t right for the clientele.

Schwartz hired someone to come in and help with business strategy and they changed the model entirely. Unplug began offering new clients a $ 40 option and they saw immediate results. Schwartz said she broke even for the first time that month and has only gone up each month since then.

To put this in context, an introductory course (four sessions) of the extremely popular practice, Transcendental Meditation, is $ 960. If one can’t pay that much upfront, the fee can be split up over four months.

Private one-on-one meditation teachers can cost just as much, if not significantly more.

The physical and mental benefits of meditation place the practice in a rapidly growing wellness category alongside many workout regimens. Experts often say it’s like exercise for your brain.

In the spring, Unplug Meditation was added to the popular exercise app ClassPass, alongside activities like Pilates, yoga, spinning and boot camp. It got a whole lot more eyeballs on the name Unplug.

Schwartz has gone from seeing a handful of people in a single class to 15, 25 and sometimes 50 in certain classes. Even though the studio isn’t overtly “spiritual” (there is no chanting or Sanskrit around), one of Unplug’s most popular classes has become the crystal healing meditation.

“I thought it would be a little too ‘woo-woo’ for what I was trying to do here,” Schwartz said. “But I really liked the teacher and we gave it a try.”

The class has become so popular that they sometimes have to turn people away for lack of space — something she would have thought unimaginable a year ago.

“You lay down and the teacher feels your energy field and decides what crystals should go on you. People walk out feeling incredible. The meditation is listening to her drop crystals on different people’s bodies.”

Some clients love the studio so much they make it a part of their daily routine, like going to the gym.

“One woman has been coming for 100 straight days,” Schwartz said. “She says she is a different person. She is nicer. Her boyfriend likes her so much more. She had a meltdown on him the day after Valentine’s Day. She was so ashamed of her behavior that she Googled what to do and meditation popped up. She has seen so much change that she comes every single day.”

Schwartz also talks about a runner who started meditating because he was no longer enjoying running, but is now back at it. Some of the Pittsburgh Steelers popped in for classes to help with mental focus.

“We have so many different types of people coming in and out of the doors — all of them are grateful. It’s so nice as a business owner to have people come up to you and say ‘you have changed my life.’ You can decide to do that any day. I wish more people could tap into that and know reinvention was possible.”

Today she calls herself a “spiritual entrepreneur” and sees herself as part of the launch of a new industry that is elevating wellness and spirituality. Her advice for people wanting to reinvent their lives, too? Do it.

“One of the teachers here says ‘it’s always now.’ The only time you have in life is right this very moment,” Schwartz said. “So if you want to do something, just do it. What is the worst that could happen? You could fail? I would rather say ‘oh well’ than ‘what if.’”

She says she doesn’t really miss the glamour of her former life. “I try not to look at it like that. I don’t want to look backwards, ever. I had a great job and it was fabulous. There are moments where I miss the splendor and the glory and the parties and the clothes. But mostly I don’t. Go with your gut, move forward and jump. If there’s passion behind what you’re doing then you will be successful.”

Schwartz has done makeovers on hundreds of people and has now meditated more times in the last year than many people will in a lifetime. But the most meaningful part of her reinvention, she says, was moving her family from New York to California.

“A lot of people love where they live. Their whole families are there, they’re holding on and they don’t want to take that risk. When you let go of everything you own and decide to go into a fully-furnished rental with nothing you like inside, it is the most freeing, fabulous feeling you can imagine,” she said. “You are free of stuff. You are free of the past and you can do anything you want.”

7 Pop Culture Documentaries To Stream On Netflix

After you’ve finished our true crime and best of Netflix round-ups, we’ve got seven more documentaries to stream.

“Beyond Clueless”
“Beyond Clueless” is the kind of educational content you forget is intellectually stimulating halfway through. The seductively calming voice of narrator Fairuza Balk walks through clips of all the major teen movies of the turn of the century, zooming in on the turmoil of adolescence through the narratives of fictional high-schools from “Mean Girls” to “The Craft.” For a teen movie junkie, “Beyond Clueless” is eye-opening to an almost startling degree. Director Charlie Lyne has managed to compress more than a decade’s worth of the genre into 89 minutes, unpacking his examples both individually and holistically for a commentary on not just film’s representation of our teen years but the cultural reality of adolescence.

beyond

“No No: A Dockumentary “
There’s no need to be a sports fan or to have heard of Dock Ellis pitching a no-hitter on LSD back in June of 1970 to enjoy “No No” (and, before you send in a correction notice, that title is a pun on its subject). Director Jeff Radice outlines Ellis’ career, but his focus is on the cultural implications Ellis had for not just baseball players of color but the black community as a whole. Through a mix of complex acts of rebellion — like wearing curlers with his uniform — and his challenging, flippant presence on and off field, Ellis changed the shape of the game. He’s best remembered for those LSD-endowed innings, though Ellis’ impact is infinitely more far reaching than a funny story about mixing drugs and baseball.

nono

“Paris Is Burning”
This classic takes on even more vibrancy and meaning with the rise of drag in the mainstream. It plays like a deep look at what you might imagine to be the heart and soul of “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” An empathetic yet unflinching look at the marginalization faced by the black members of the LGBT community, “Paris Is Burning” peels back to focus not only on the community that is its subject, but the beautiful power of being yourself in spite of all obstacles.

paris

“Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon”
Mike Myers’ directorial debut does not even pretend to be fair and balanced. His look at Shep Gordon takes on a tone so sunnily positive that it feels more like a tribute montage than a documentary. Still, there are some very interesting stories peppered into the mix of A-listers that Myers has gathered to reminisce about their pal. Gorgon is a public relations genius, so it only makes sense that he’d emerge from a biographical documentary looking so damn wonderful. The most compelling part of “Supermensch” lies underneath the surface, in the fleeting glimpses at the machinations of the Hollywood PR machine, how it shapes our perceptions and, of course, consumerism.

super

“Something from Nothing: The Art of Rap”
Ice-T uses “Something From Nothing” to focus on the craft of rap. He goes to its roots, the way rapping rose up as a means to make music without instruments or costly production accessories. This is a carefully painted portrait which tears down the extravagant misconceptions that cling to the modern state of the genre (the mainstream idea that it is rooted in money, sex and violence). There is a mix of poetry and rebellion at the core of rap. “Something For Nothing” is a powerful and necessary reminder that it is truly an art form.

something

“Madonna: Truth or Dare”
No shade, but, like, if Katy Perry thought “Part of Me” was a tell-all, she has probably never seen “Madonna: Truth or Dare.” Alek Keshishian’s black-and-white look at the superstar doesn’t play like a vanity piece or extended tour promotion, as pop stars’ docs are wont to do. Instead, “Truth or Dare” is a revelatory peek at a woman who is not a different person on stage, but rather only truly herself in the public eye. As Warren Beaty tells Madonna’s doctor when he asks if she’d like to move their conversation off-screen: “She doesn’t want to live off-camera, much less talk … Why would you say something if it’s off-camera? What point is there existing?”

madon

“Bill Cunningham New York”
If you have a heart, Bill Cunningham will steal it within the first 20 minutes of Richard Press’ documentary. The most charming part about the man behind The New York Times’ style section is that he has no idea how very charming he is. Cunningham is crucial to the charting of trends and understanding the practicality of fashion, almost more of an unofficial anthropologist than a photographer. He is a staple of life in New York, who has managed to stay humble, kind and motivated only by a genuine love of his work. What’s almost more interesting than his cultural influence is the beautiful soul of the man behind the blue smock. He has a perspective on life that most inhabitants of NYC could only hope to learn.

North West Takes the Ballerina Bun to New Heights

North West hair bun white tutu

Acting as fashion’s unofficial first toddler, North West has already exhibited an impressively prescient lineup of breezy hairstyles, making shower-fresh buns and sleek knots her signature long before they swept the Met Gala and Cannes Film Festival. Spotted leaving ballet class in Los Angeles yesterday, West showed her hand at off-duty beauty, this time embracing the incidental hair upgrade of a workout with a fuzzy topknot that left out a few face-framing wisps—and may have ushered in a new trend by way of her ballet white tutu and Balmain leather jacket.

The Husband Bonus: Better Than an Empty Bag

2015-05-29-1432915047-7624821-richwoman.jpg

Tongues are wagging faster than a group of over-privileged kids on a playdate at a sucker factory. A recent article in The New York Times described the unbelievable lives of women who marry rich men and live in the Upper East Side in New York City. The author lets her pinky finger down long enough to write torrid tales of year-end bonuses paid to the women for excelling at their wifely duties. I missed that memo and married for love.

At least paying the little woman a bonus is better than killing them and substituting robots, per the movie “The Stepford Wives.” Sometimes I think the wealthy husbands would prefer androids so they could avoid and eliminate all that messy relationship drivel. I also suspect that these women could be promoted to The First Wives Club after their bored husbands find younger, prettier, more efficient models to replace them.

The must-have purchase from these pay-to-play marriages is a Hermes Birkin bag that costs around $ 120,000. That’s not a house; it’s a purse. As does my sensible, inexpensive, black tote bag, a Hermes treasure will hold tissues, assorted combs, lip gloss, a few pens that work, and a wallet of worn credit cards. I win.

The article created quite a commotion among my online group of middle-aged friends. Comments ranged from “Pricy Prostitutes” to “I get my designer bags on sale” to “Where’s New York?” After reading about how the hyper-scheduled children of these arranged marriages need counseling to learn how to play, I threw up my hands and my breakfast. I decided to turn the designer tables and offer my own counsel, gleaned after more than five decades on this amazing planet. I don’t need a Wife Bonus, but I’ll gladly give a regular gratuity to my husband.

Here are my suggestions for how to give a Husband Bonus.

1. Arrange weekly playdates. There is no need for counseling when you remind your lover that there’s a party for two tonight at 9:00. Toys and finger puppets aren’t necessary but could come in handy.

2. Show your private equity fund. Sleep naked and receive a robust return on your investment.

3. Don’t wait until yearend for a bonus. If you’re both older than 55, take advantage of the time you still have. There is a good chance you’ll be asleep long before midnight on New Year’s Eve.

4. The only board we’re sitting on is at the pool. The article described the duty of rich people to sit on major boards of high-profile charities. After decades of volunteering for various organizations, serving on advisory boards, and giving my time, talent, and resources, I’m turning over those jobs to younger people. I’ll take my husband and watch and support selected causes from the beachside martini bar.

5. Take this bag, please. I will never own a purse that costs more than my first house. A designer bag is just an empty container of stale air. I promise my sweetheart that I’ll never pine and beg for anything bigger than a Silver Oak Cabernet. I’ll offset the request with a gift certificate for a couple’s massage. See how this works?

The New York Times article stoked the flames of indignation, jealousy, and insecurity among some women who only want their husbands to earn a paycheck and come home at night. I choose not to provide links to the article or to the author and her upcoming book because she’s received enough free publicity. When the dust settles, the rich wives will have their cleaning women come over to tidy the mess, my friends will continue laughing at life, and I’ll fix a cheeseboard with cocktails for the patio and invite my husband to join me. It’s bonus time.

Ladyfag’s Pop Souk Taking Over Webster Hall May 31, 2015

This weekend, New York City nightlife icon Ladyfag will bring the fashion and art out of nightlife and into a daytime market where you can snatch eclectic items and meet some of the up-and-coming artists and designers of tomorrow.

Called Pop Souk, the pop up market will take place this year on a larger scale than ever before, filling the legendary Webster Hall — from its balcony to the studio below — with the work of almost 100 of downtown’s NYC’s budding creatives. Previous installments of Pop Souk have taken place on a smaller scale, like the 2013 market outside of the Standard Hotel.

Ladyfag, who was previously featured in the HuffPost Gay Voices series, “After Dark: NYC Nightlife Today And Days Past,” has curated a massive line-up for this event, including Whatever21, BCALLA, TILLYandWILLIAM, Bond Hardware, Ben Copperwheat, Dominique Echeverria, Geoffrey Mac and Sir New York, among others. A full list of vendors can be found here.

Additionally, $ 1 of each $ 5 entry fee will be donated to the Ali Forney Center, benefiting queer homeless youth.

The Huffington Post spoke with Ladyfag this week about Pop Souk, how the pop up market has grown since its inception and what attendees can expect.

The Huffington Post: What is your overarching vision for Pop Souk?
Pop Souk is a happening. Part market/part party. It’s kind of a nexus of all my worlds. At the end, it’s really about creating a platform for all of these amazing talented people I know and bringing my community together to share in an experience.

I sold vintage in Toronto for 10 years, so that’s my background and will always be in my blood. In a way, throwing parties has a similar base for me — it’s about bringing people together and forming connections. Now people shop on the Internet, which is great if you want a particular product, but it’s not the same thing as meeting the artists themselves and hearing about their passions. I loved the connection I had with so many clients over he years who became friends to me. We’d share our passion for certain designers, or swoon together over antique embroidery. It’s about sharing the love of fashion and people’s passions.

pop

How do you choose the artists whose work you feature?
In some ways Pop Souk is just a mirror of the “downtown” scene. Some of the vendors are such talented artists and I want to buy everything they make, and then some of them might just make cool t-shirts. But, more importantly, they’re super cool kids who are part of what makes my bubble of New York City major. These kids don’t follow trends — they march to the beat of their own drums and create them. Everyone who does Pop Souk, from the artists to the DJs, are all people that inspire me. They’re the heartbeat of NYC and the reason I love living here.

tilly

How has this event changed and grown since its inception?
I remember trying explain to my boyfriend years ago about this idea I had for Pop Souk, but it was hard because nothing like that existed. To explain it, it could sound like a flea market, which it’s not. So I got a little team together and sort of used my vintage market and nightlife templates and combined them. When the first Pop Souk happened, my team stood behind me, but had doubts of what it could be. At the end they all gasped, because it really did become what I had dreamed of.

You have to come to understand. Once you get there you would never just call it a flea market — there’s a certain NYC magic to Pop Souk. It’s growing in size and scope. We literally are taking over all of Webster Hall, from the studio below to the balcony above… it’s huge! There are now nearly 100 artists taking part, and so I have a bigger responsibility to the artists to make sure I can help all of them. It’s all still very DIY, so it has some bumps on the road. But we’re all in this together and every year it gets better. Most business models want to grow to increase revenue, for better or for worse. That’s never been my M.O. We’re the anti-H&M… we’re all about the magic!

bond

In the past, how have you seen Pop Souk inform and shape the fashion industry?
I’ve watched some of the artists who were just starting at Pop Souk grow and are now making big waves. From Zana Bayne, Chromat, Chris Habana, Gypsy Sport — there’s so many of them and I’m so proud of all them! Lots of fashion editors and stylists come to Pop Souk, so it does act as a platform for good exposure for them. In a way, Pop Souk is a nest for a lot of young artists, and this mama is more then happy to watch them take what they need from us, and then fly higher!

Yes! Acquiring ‘Perfect’ Pitch Is Possible For Some Adults, Scientists Say

It turns out that some people can be trained to be the next Mariah Carey.

A team of psychologists recently revealed that they were able to successfully teach adults the prized musical skill of so-called absolute pitch, widely known as “perfect” pitch. The ability helps you to identify a note without using a reference pitch.

An elusive skill. Scientists previously thought that perfect pitch was either something you were born with, or something that could only be learned during childhood. The ability is considered remarkably rare — only around one in 10,000 individuals has perfect pitch.

“This is the first significant demonstration that the ability to identify notes by hearing them may well be something that individuals can be trained to do,” Dr. Howard Nusbaum, professor of psychology at the University of Chicago and part of the research team, said in a written statement. “It’s an ability that is teachable, and it appears to depend on a general cognitive ability of holding sounds in one’s mind.”

Practice makes perfect? For the research, 47 men and women at the university — with varying musical experience — listened to musical notes through headphones and were asked to recreate the note that they heard. They also were asked to identify notes by name, such as middle-C or F-sharp.

After the tests, the men and women participated in a training program, during which they listened to and identified piano notes, receiving feedback on whether they named the correct notes or not. The researchers retested the men and women after the training and found that the participants retained most of what they learned, showing improvements in identifying notes.

“We demonstrate three important findings in this paper,” Nusbaum said in the statement. “First, in contrast to previous studies, we are able to establish significant absolute pitch training in adults without drugs. Second, we show that this ability is predicted by auditory working memory. Third, we show that this training lasts for months.”

Vetting the pitches. The researchers noted that more experiments are needed to determine whether this adult-acquired perfect pitch is comparable to the abilities of someone who has had perfect pitch for most of their life.

Indeed, this isn’t the first time that scientists have taken a close look at adults’ abilities to acquire absolute pitch. In 2014, researchers posed that a drug known as valproate, or valproic acid, could help adults learn how to produce perfect pitch since it enhances the brain’s “neuroplasticity.” And a 2012 study suggests that your genes play a large role in your ability to obtain perfect pitch.

The new research was published online in the journal Cognition on April 20, 2015.

What to Wear to the Wedding That Feels More Like a High School Reunion

Photographed by Ellen Von Unwerth, Vogue, June 1998

Congratulations! Your best friend is getting married to a man with a strong jaw and a full set of teeth. And no, we don’t mean your best friend who you’ve met in your new city or town, through work or through roommates. Instead, we are talking about your high school best friend, you know, the one who you skipped class with, hung out at the local pizza parlor with, and cruised around in a Jeep with throughout the winding, barren roads of your sleepy, one-gas-station town.

Now, maybe you left your former town and are successful with a studio apartment of your very own and a stellar doorman who presses the elevator buttons for you—or maybe you chose to stay close by, residing happily and cheerily with your husband, a tow-headed child, and a dog with three legs named “Tripod.” Either way, we bet you are doing fantastic things! Except, here comes the tricky part—you haven’t spoken to anyone from high school, except for your bride-to-be best friend, for years. That means, get ready to see the local folk for a mini Romy and Michele–style high school reunion, which includes the former sweetheart who took you to prom, the frenemy who once put peanut butter in your backpack, and a valedictorian who always needed to feel validated. Sounds fun? No—but it can be.

The key to making this an enjoyable and bearable time is to first take a cue from Teddy Roosevelt and “Speak softly and carry a big stick.” This means, there’s no need to talk a big game about how great you are—and nor should you dress that way. You are already satisfied with yourself—the last thing you need is a look-at-me outfit and a helmet-style blowout that might inspire a few drunken tangents about your accomplishments à la Charlize Theron in Young Adult.

“Remember, this isn’t your time to shine. It’s the bride’s. It’s not about having a boisterous ball gown with something to prove,” says Vogue.com Market Editor Chelsea Zalopany. “Instead, your behavior, as well as your clothing choices, should be elegant, memorable, polite, and a little demure.” To express those qualities sartorially, abide by the dress code but keep the overall look relaxed. A charming sundress with a floral pattern and a block heel is a stellar fit for something outdoors, while for a formal black-tie affair, you can opt for a organza gown with deep décolletage but a low kicky shoe. But remember, no matter what you choose to put on, make sure you are comfortable. If you are secure with what you are wearing—and especially with yourself—you’ll pass the occasion with flying colors.

Baby Meets His Mother’s Twin For The First Time, Loses His Mind

Judging from this video, the concept of “twins” may be a little too much for a 10-month-old brain to handle.

For now, it’s probably easier for this infant to assume his mom — an all-powerful being, as all moms are — is simply in two places at once.

“Dainius’s son was born in Lithuania last year, and the family recently brought him to Canada for the first time,” writes Storyful, a social media licenser and publisher, in the description of the video. “While visiting Montreal the 10 month old was introduced to his aunt. Unfortunately for the poor little guy, his mum and aunt are twins, so he had a little trouble coming to terms with the situation!”

Attachment theorists, this video is for you.

These Jane Pain Lingerie Ads Are Not What They Seem

Unconventional lingerie marketing is everywhere these days, but a new campaign for Argentinian fashion brand Jane Pain has done it in a completely fresh way.

In the clever ads, devised by the agency Conill Saatchi & Saatchi USA, sexy optical illusions are created by placing underwear over the bend of a knee, an armpit and an elbow.

plain jane

A photo of the actual body part used accompanies the ad, along with the line, “If it can make your armpit [or knee or elbow] look sexy, imagine what it can do in the right place.”

This is not the brand’s first foray into edgy advertising. Back in 2012, Jane Pain’s provocative campaign featured double-take-inducing photo editing that made models appear a lot more exposed than we’re used to seeing in print ads.

What do you think of the provocative campaign? Sound off below!

Judge Halts Kelly Rutherford’s Temporary Custody Order

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A judge has halted an order that granted actress Kelly Rutherford temporary custody of her two young children to return them from Monaco to Los Angeles.

The ruling Thursday came after lawyers for Rutherford’s ex-husband, Daniel Giersch, filed documents showing that a Monaco court now has jurisdiction over the children.

Giersch and Rutherford married in 2006 and filed for divorce in Los Angeles two years later. They were granted a divorce in July 2010 and continued to fight over custody until the 2013 order allowed Giersch to keep the children abroad.

A judge stated after giving Rutherford, who starred on “Melrose Place,” temporary custody last week that he was concerned Giersch had violated a custody order.

Giersch’s attorneys argued Thursday that Rutherford was aware Monaco had jurisdiction over the case and withheld crucial information.

11 Ways to a Letter-Perfect Wedding with Calligraphy and Monograms

Photo: Courtesy of Ink Revival / @inkrevival

It wasn’t that long ago that you were filling the margins of notebooks with hearts filled with your initials plus his; now you are planning your big day. One of the most popular, and elegant, ways to customize a wedding is with calligraphy, which can be used to transform an invitation into a gift, or add poetry to a menu. But not all lettering and typography need be applied to paper; metals can be engraved, wax stamped, fabrics embroidered. Here, eleven ways, large and small, to bring a signature touch to your wedding.

The Five Stages of Trying on Your Bathing Suit

Grief is an amazing emotion. It is so complex. It even has five different stages all rolled into one. Each lasting a long time. Yet unique to each individual. Everyone’s grief is their own. Grief is very personal. Like snowflakes, no two people grieve in exactly the same way. This is my story.

It was a normal Thursday morning. I got the kids off to school. I was cleaning up the house. I threw a load of laundry in. I made the beds. I cleaned all the breakfast dishes. And then it happened.

Like most tragedies, I did not see it coming. I was completely caught off guard. It hit me like a ton of bricks. Never in my wildest dreams did I think my day would go like this when I woke up this morning. Nothing can prepare you for this type of pain. Even if you think you are prepared. You are not. Nothing can prepare you. Nothing.

This morning I made a decision that would make me question the way the world turns. I made a decision that would change my life forever. I tried on my bathing suit.

1. DENIAL and ISOLATION

This can’t be true. This isn’t happening. This is not my body. This is a cruel joke. That cannot be my reflection in the mirror. I feel so alone. Nobody will understand what I’m feeling. I’m fat. And cold. I. Can. Not.

I’m going to crawl back into bed and pull the covers over my head and sleep. When I wake up I’ll find this was all a dream. A really, really bad fat dream.

2. ANGER

This is total bullshit. I don’t deserve this. It should have been you. Why is this happening to me?

I’ve been running on the treadmill for the last two weeks straight. And this is what I get? I’ve been doing everything right. This is so unfair. Why me? Why now?

I gave birth four times and this is the thanks I get. I will never don a two piece ever again. Or a monokini for that matter. I hate everyone. Especially skinny people. With Abs.

2015-05-29-1432913111-5325070-nancykerrigan.jpg

3. BARGAINING

Dear God please make this blubber go away. I’ll do anything. I’m only eating fruit from now until Spring Break. I won’t so much as even look in the same direction as a ding dong for the rest of my life.

I promise. I’ll be better. I’m going to run on the treadmill in the mornings and then go to Spin class at night. Every. Single. Day. I’ll never eat another piece of bread as long as I live. I swear.

I won’t have one more drop of alcohol (on weekdays before noon). I’ll do anything. Just make it go away. Make all the lard go away. Please Dear Lord I’ll never ask you for anything again for as long as I live. If you call looking like this in a bathing suit living.

Sweet Baby Jesus make me skinny again. It’s all I ask. I just want to rock this tankini like all the other MILFs. I don’t want to have to find the fattest person on the beach and lay next to them just to feel better about myself.

4. DEPRESSION

I can’t go on living like this. I’m fat. I can’t bear to see myself like this.

My family and friends and fellow beach-goers would be better off without me. I feel so hopeless. I did this to myself. I deserve every last pound.

I acted like a fool. Like every supper was my last supper. Bread, pasta, wheat. I’m so weak. Dairy, sugar, gluten. I’ll never be thin again. I’m going to die fat. And alone. In a swim dress.

5. ACCEPTANCE

This is who I am now. I’m chubby. And that’s okay. There are worse things in life. Although I can’t think of any off the top of my head at the moment.

I’m going to be okay. This is my new normal. I’m going to own this new, bigger me. Everything happens for a reason. There is now just more of me to love.

I will just buy a floor length, turtleneck cover up. And I’ll get a nice spray tan. That will make me look thinner. That will give me some confidence. And I’ll pray for rain. Lots of it.

2015-05-29-1432913175-9018306-imasurvivor.jpg

Life as I know it will never be the same. But I am okay. I will wrap my fat ass in a sarong and get on with my life. Because I’m a survivor. I’m not gon’ give up. I’m not gon’ stop. I’m gon’ work harder. I’m a survivor. I’m gon’ make it. I will survive. Keep on survivin’.

26 Stunning Photos Of Women’s Tattoos — And The Stories Behind Them

Tattoo artist Kat Von D once said, “I am a canvas of my experiences, my story is etched in lines and shading, and you can read it on my arms, my legs, my shoulders, and my stomach.”

Tattoos are stories — marked in ink and blood — quietly traveling around us all day on shoulder blades and wrists and across entire backs. These stories can be powerful, uplifting and even heart-wrenching. They can symbolize a life-changing event, they can be in memory of someone special, or they might exist simply because they’re beautiful.

We spoke with 26 women who shared photographs of their tattoos and the varied reasons they got them. Some tattoos came out of heartbreak, others from moments of celebration.

Here are 26 gorgeous images of women’s tattoos and the stories behind each of them:

These interviews have been edited and condensed.

‘Deadpool’ Finally Feels Real Now That Ryan Reynolds Confirms Production Has Wrapped

There may be no forthcoming film that ignites a spark in comic-book fans’ eyes more than “Deadpool,” the “X-Men” spinoff that has been in various stages of development since at least 2000. Just the idea that it exists is like an Infinity Stone leading to some kind of fantasy movie land for superhero obsessives. That makes the news that “Deadpool” has completed shooting all the more potent.

Ryan Reynolds, who portrays the title character in the Tim Miller-directed film, tweeted a photo on Friday to announce that production has “wrapped.” In the same breath, he targeted the story’s voracious fans, saying, “We got to make this film because of you.”

“Deadpool” will open Feb. 12, 2016, further proving the summer-blockbuster season is essentially a year-round affair now. One thing that’s still up in the air about the forthcoming action film, however, is Hugh Jackman’s involvement. The actor stated previously that the forthcoming third “Wolverine” film will mark his final time playing the clawed hero. But in an interview with Australia’s News Limited, Reynolds said that “Deadpool” could feature one more Jackman appearance.

“God I hope so, that would be really nice,” Reynolds said. “I dunno, we’ll see. It seems like he’s open to it, but it’s gonna be more of a scheduling issue than anything else.”

Trip Tips: Music, beaches and ‘fromagers’ in Senegal’s Casamance

A tourist walks past cows on the beach in Cap SkirringBy Carolyn Cohn ZIGUNICHOR, Senegal (Reuters) – A mix of locals and music fans were watching silently or dancing, framed by the branches of the giant "fromager" tree that marks the center of the Senegalese village of Diembering, as hip-hop band Tirailleurs started to sing about me. Or at least apparently they did – if only I could understand their Wolof language. Tirailleurs were performing at the four-day Festival des Rizieres, an annual celebration of hip-hop and reggae in the southern Casamance region of the West African country.

This Little Piggy Had A Heartwarming Adventure In The Sweetest Cell Phone Ad

Animal lovers are seeing something a little bigger than a mere come-on for telecommunications services in this Vodafone NZ commercial.

It’s an uplifting tale of a mail carrier discovering a lost pig, searching high and low for her owner and — phew! — ultimately saving Piggy Sue from an ugly end.

Animals Australia for example — which regularly advocates against pig slaughter — praised what some are seeing as an anti-meat message:

“When most corporations put a ‘pig’ in their TV ad — it’s to convince you to eat animals — or more specifically, their particular brand of artery-clogging bacon-laden fast food. Vodafone New Zealand did the complete opposite,” the group wrote on Facebook.

Spokesperson Fleur McFarlane was a bit coy when asked if Vodafone is indeed trying to reduce bacon consumption while also expanding its customer base.

“This ad is all about how much better life is when you’re connected to your mates –- and the fact that friendships often form in unexpected places,” she said by email, adding that the intention of the ad is to show elements of New Zealand culture for folks “to identify with: care for our friends, whether human or animal, and our community spirit.”

We’ll take it. Especially since, best of all, Piggy Sue got a happy ending in real life, too, we’re told.

She and her understudy under-piggy, named Chatty, have settled in “with loving families” on New Zealand farms where they “are having a great time,” McFarlane said. “Both pigs are cherished pets, with carers who’ve made them part of the family.”

Duggar Child Molestation Scandal Parodied By ‘Funny Or Die’

The Duggar family has been in the news following Josh Duggar’s admission that he molested five minor girls when he was a teenager, some of whom were his own sisters, and his parents Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar confessed to protecting him from authorities for years.

As the drama surrounding the family continues to unfold and TLC still has yet to decide if they’ll cancel “19 Kids and Counting,” Funny or Die decided it was a good a time as any to take on the family in a parody video.

Kelli Garner Says Marilyn Monroe Taught Her To Appreciate Her Curves

Kelli Garner is the latest actress to take on the role of Marilyn Monroe, and playing the screen legend taught her a thing or two about embracing her curves.

“I’m tinier than Marilyn was, but I still have some curves that I didn’t know what to do with,” Garner said when talking to Yahoo! Style about her role in Lifetime’s “The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe.” She worked with costume designer Gersha Phillips, who taught her about high-waisted pedal pushers and clothing that accentuates her neck. “Now that I’ve come back home from shooting, I’ve realized my closet is a shame. I need a complete overhaul.”

Embodying the 1950s bombshell made Garner rethink contemporary beauty standards.

“I was afraid to be too skinny, because they were filming for that kind of 1940s/’50s figure. I was trying to stay soft to get that body type,” she said. “I would see Marilyn in a little bathing suit or jeans, and she would be laughing and she’d have a full belly coming over her jeans, which is so beautiful. If that is something that happened to me, Kelli, I’d be mortified. With our standards of beauty now, it’s like, ‘Oh you can’t have those rolls there.’ But I think Marilyn is one of the most stunning women who has every been around, and she was never in perfect shape.”

marilyn

The two-night miniseries, which premieres May 30, covers Monroe’s life from 15 years old to 36, when she died. It explores her relationship with her mother, who was diagnosed with schizophrenia.

“[Monroe] lied about it; I think she told lots of weird different little stories,” Garner told The Hollywood Reporter. “Mental health is still stigmatized, but back then, even [more]. I didn’t know she spent a lot of her time with doctors, therapists. I didn’t realize the fortitude she had. I didn’t realize the great work ethic she had. She’s a fighter, hard worker. She’s a perfectionist — I think I share that with her. I didn’t know how hard-core of a perfectionist she was until I started reading about it.”

“The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe” begins May 30 at 8 pm EST on Lifetime.

Lost My Phone, Lost My Cable, Lost My Mind, Hopefully Lost Some Weight

I can’t live. With or without you.

I spent last weekend celebrating. It was a real stretch for me. My son made his First Holy Communion. And in honor of us sharing our first official drink together, otherwise known as the Blood of Christ, I went all out. We had a big party with some other families in the neighborhood.

In the midst of the celebration I let my little guy play on my phone. It hasn’t been seen since. Just like when my remote went missing, the police aren’t doing a damn thing about it.

I woke up Sunday morning like I do most Sundays. Shaking. And filled with regret. I instantly remembered that I came home without my phone. Wasn’t sure if all my kids were here. But I knew my phone wasn’t. It’s like a sixth sense or something.

See the stone set in your eyes
See the thorn twist in your side
I’ll wait for you
Sleight of hand and twist of fate
On a bed of nails she makes me wait
And I wait without you

Sunday wasn’t a Funday. It was a really, really not so fun day. It’s really hard to find your phone when you don’t have your phone. I couldn’t text anyone to ask if they had it. I couldn’t call anyone. Not that I ever really call anyone. And the hopeless feeling I had thinking of all the unanswered texts people were sending me was unbearable. I’m here. I don’t hate you! I just don’t know where my phone is.

2015-05-29-1432911806-7265056-bono.jpg

It finally dawned on me to use the old find my freaking iphone app. It came up at the address of said party. That was at 11:36pm on Sunday night. I was able to fall asleep knowing my baby was okay. In the morning when I checked again, there was no pulse. What good is a freaking app like that if the damn phone goes dead? I’ll tell you what good it is. About as useful as Beau is at the grocery store. Not very freaking useful.

With or without you
With or without you
I can’t live
With or without you

My phone really does take up so much of my time. One of my kids could be bleeding and I’m like, one sec, I just got a text. Or the kitchen could be on fire. How the kitchen would actually catch fire I’m not quite sure. Unless I fell asleep in there with a lit cigarette. But anyway, if I got an FB notification, the fire would come second on my list of priorities.

Come Monday morning I know the location of my phone. And by that I mean I know what house it is in. Unfortunately it’s lost in the biggest house in the entire neighborhood. Great for the family that lives there. Not so great for me. We search everywhere. But can’t find it anywhere.

Through the storm we reach the shore
You gave it all but I want more
And I’m waiting for you

I’m waiting. It is now Wednesday. I have come to realize that life is really not worth living without my phone. It’s just so hard. I had to get into my car and drive over to my bestie Flora’s house to let her know I was alive. She lives like six blocks away. Thankfully she was able to tell our other bestie, Fawn, who was in Mexico and worried sick.

Instead of texting all of my neighbors every day, I have to send a child house to house to deliver my messages. Only prob with that is my kids forget the message or run into a friend and I never get a response. No one should have to live like this.

My hands are tied, my body bruised
She’s got me with
Nothing to win and
Nothing left to lose

My friend Flo stopped over to say our girls were starting softball and the coach called everyone to tell them what team they’re on. Flo said, no problem, she’d find out for me and then send a pigeon with a note in it’s mouth to let me know. I still haven’t heard.

Then today I realize that I have no idea when all of my appointments are. I had to call doctors offices, hair salons, coach after coach. Then my cousin Jamy stops over and asks why I didn’t just look on my husband’s calendar since they’re all synced together. Information I could have used this morning.

And you give yourself away
And you give yourself away
And you give
And you give
And you give yourself away

And if losing my phone wasn’t bad enough. Our cable isn’t working. I have zero communication with the outside world. I mean I still drink my wine at 10am as if Kathy Lee and Hoda were in my living room. But they’re not. No one is. It’s so quiet.

This is what it must be like to be dead.

I’m still holding out hope that my phone turns up. Even though I’ve been told that the first twenty-four hours are crucial. With each passing moment, a little more of me dies. I know how this is going to end. With me and a hand me down iphone 4s. I. Can. Not.

But like everything else I’ve been through, I will get through this. With or without you and my list of contacts, checking my email from a laptop. But know this. The struggle is real.

The Design And Culinary Treasures That Remind Us Why We Love Italy So Much

This is the Italy we love

beautiful italy

The Italian landscape has always been a great attraction. The nature, the masterpieces of art, the enchanting cities. The quality of life is special. To let oneself go is only natural. And the Italians? Stereotypes depict them as outgoing and gallant. Lovers of the “Made in Italy” brand admire their creativity and know-how.

We have decided to introduce our readers to Italian excellence. Entrepreneurs and artisans, fashion designers and connoisseurs, inventors and farmers. We have selected 12 brands from different sectors: fashion, design, food, manufacturing and cars. This is an arbitrary number, of course. In addition to these 12, we could have picked out another 1,000 more examples of why we love Italy. Unique realities are to be found all over our country. Small, big, famous and secret. But we had to make a choice and we decided to choose quality and audacity as our main criteria. Looking Back at the Hangout Heroes: San Fermin, Take a Bow

Two weeks ago, the 2015 Hangout music festival officially began on the beach along the Alabama Gulf Coast, a setting that artists and fans alike agree is one of the most beautiful for an event of this magnitude.

With more than 70 acts, six stages and all sorts of fun in the sun, Hangout set a high standard that will be difficult for others to match during this outdoor concert season. The three-day event (May 15-17) in the Deep South is no longer a deep secret, with Entertainment Weekly ranking it among the 15 best summer festivals in its May 22 issue.

Beck fanAnd that’s even despite some major headlining disappointments, with Sam Smith bowing out before the start because of a vocal cord injury that required surgery, further weakening a list of headlining acts on the main stages that included the predictable Zac Brown Band and an uninspired Beck set that was in dire need of Jeff Beck to light a fire under the festival’s closing performer. (See the random “fan” at left expressing his viewpoint hours before the show that night.)

Cold War Kids crowd

Cold War Kids play on the Palladia Stage at the 2015 Hangout Festival.

Yet it’s the Hangout heroes on some of the smaller stages that I’ll remember the most after witnessing 20 acts, beginning with the North Mississippi Allstars/Robert Randolph collaboration known as the Word at the May 14 kickoff party, snapping more than a thousand photos, writing 10 articles, conducting nine interviews in advance and during the festival and asking five artists to take selfies during their stay. (Vote for your favorite in the slideshow.)

The biggest (and most unlikely) hero of them all was Ellis Ludwig-Leone. Many of you undoubtedly have never heard of him or seen his Brooklyn-based eight-piece band called San Fermin. And the wildly creative group attracted probably no more than 100 informed folks to the smallest of the festival’s six main venues, the Salt Life stage, on a Saturday night before Zac Brown and Major Lazer went head-to-head on opposite ends of the site.

To the uninitiated, you missed the most inventive, intellectual, divergent display of indie pop-rock theatricality to hit Gulf Shores, Alabama, this year. And Ludwig-Leone, a 25-year-old, Rhode Island-born son of painters/professors who who grew up in Massachusetts playing classical piano before studying music composition and becoming a Yale graduate, is the mad scientist who created San Fermin.

Ellis Ludwig-Leone San FerminQuiet and unpretentious, Ludwig-Leone (right) walked to the media tent between the Ferris wheel and huge Hangout stage by himself promptly at 8:30 on a Saturday night for our interview, 15 minutes after his band concluded an explosive set.

San Fermin’s whirlwind visit to the Hangout meant getting there just in time for soundcheck, then driving to New Orleans that same night to catch a plane to San Diego to start a series of West Coast gigs. He even missed the graduation of his sister (an art major also from Yale) to make this festival date.

No entourage, publicist or autograph seekers were in sight as Ludwig-Leone arrived, looking more like a guy who studies rock formations than a composer and performer of art house rock. (He dislikes the term “baroque pop,” by the way.)

Under the influence of New York composer Nico Muhly fresh out of high school, Ludwig-Leone learned to appreciate music that reached outside his comfort zone.

“When I was working for him, I would basically just do anything from helping with his ballets and things like that to concert music to helping with recording sessions that he did for … arrangements he did for pop artists,” Ludwig-Leone said. “And I think seeing that happen and seeing how he navigated those different roles, certainly rubbed off on me a lot.”

The fan of the Ben Folds Five played recitals as a schoolkid but “mostly just listened to Beck or whatever,” Ludwig-Leone said. “And then I went to college and they don’t teach rock music in college. (laughs) So I was like, all right, well I guess I’ll really throw myself into the classical music thing. And I think through that I learned a lot about arranging and how music is put together.”

Just a couple of years later, Ludwig-Leone is traveling in a cramped Sprinter van that often includes his seven band mates and three crew members.

San Fermin push

Allen Tate of San Fermin gives a playful push to
saxophonist Stephen Chen during the Hangout festival.

He was pleased with the enthusiastic reception from the small but boisterous crowd at the Salt Life stage, but recognized the popularity issues San Fermin faced on this hot, muggy night along the Gulf Coast.

“With these kinds of things … it’s almost better to play earlier on a different stage,” he said. “You’re basically competing with Skrillex and Father John Misty,” referring to the two acts that his band was up against (including one of the most popular on the EDM scene whose sounds from the nearby Boom Boom Tent were clearly audible) during the 7:15-8:15 p.m. time slot.

“I felt the crowd was great and it was cool because they obviously all were there for us,” Ludwig-Leone added. “Usually with a festival crowd, people are just kind of there, but those guys, obviously, all of them knew all the words.”

Expect more sing-alongs to take place as San Fermin makes its way through the summer circuit, including stops at the Nelsonville Music Festival and the Forecastle Festival, a July tour with Alt-J, then the Austin City Limits Music Festival in October.

Even before selling out the Troubadour in Los Angeles on May 19, Ludwig-Leone just seemed delighted to be playing anywhere where San Fermin can spread the word through their music after releasing its second full-length record, Jackrabbit, in April.

“We put out the album, did two shows at Music Hall in Williamsburg (in Brooklyn on April 23-24) and basically went off to play every single night,” said Ludwig-Leone, who also contributed synth and additional percussion on Jackrabbit. “So I haven’t really had any chance to digest the fact that we put it out. It’s just been go, go, go. But they’re really fun to play live and the fans seem to like it, so it’s going good so far.”

While treating fans to an occasional offbeat cover like Weezer’s “Buddy Holly,” it’s the songs on this latest album that needed one important change from 2013′s self-titled debut for the man who’s responsible for all the original music, lyrics and arrangements.

“I think I tried to make it more personalized to the band,” Ludwig-Leone said. “Those parts were written for those people this time rather than sort of in the abstract.”

San Fermin John Brandon crowdHis long cast of characters includes: Allen Tate, one of the lead vocalists and the group founder’s collaborator almost since the time they met at a Berklee College of Music summer program when Ludwig-Leone was 15; Charlene Kaye, the Hawaii-born, Arizona-raised singer-songwriter who replaced Rae Cassidy in 2014; Rebekah Durham, violin; John Brandon, trumpet; Stephen Chen, saxophone; Tyler McDiarmid, electric guitar, acoustic guitar, electric bass; and Michael Hanf, drums, vibraphone, glockenspiel, additional percussion. (At left, Charlene Kaye and John Brandon play to the crowd.)

Along with Tate, Ludwig-Leone has worked with his kick-ass brass players Chen and Brandon for years, “So there’s a lot of trust that’s built up.” But when it comes to a live setting, “I can’t control any of them,” he said with a laugh, mentioning they have the freedom to improvise during solos.

“It’s kind of a different thing. Most bands don’t have a trumpet player who goes out in the audience. As long as people dig it, it’s fine with me. As long as the music is played well, that’s all I care about.”

Kaye and Durham also bolted out front during the Hangout performance, which included riveting versions of the album’s title track and “Philosopher,” both sung by the 28-year-old woman whose high and mighty voice wonderfully complements Tate’s low-range dulcet tones.

“She was recommended to me by I think maybe Allen’s vocal teacher,” Ludwig-Leone said of Kaye, who has recorded two solo albums. “And then it was like a match made in heaven. … She got thrown into the fire pretty quick. The first thing we did (after she joined in 2014) was go to Ireland. And we did this crazy European tour. And she was still learning the lyrics. But she’s really come into herself. It feels so natural now.”

With so much going on visually and aurally onstage, San Fermin’s show is reminiscent of another recent musical treat, when David Byrne and St. Vincent collaborated and toured with a brass section behind their Love this Giant album.

“Yeah, I loved that,” Ludwig-Leone said, seemingly flattered by the comparison. “I actually didn’t see them live but my family did and told me about it. But I’ve seen videos. I love that record.”

Regarding his role in San Fermin, Ludwig-Leone said, “I’m certainly like the bandleader. But I try not to think of it as a dictatorship. … Musically, I arrange everything and I bring it to the band, but you’d be stupid not to trust your musicians. They’re all such great players.”

They, in turn, can thank their bandleader for developing a sophisticated sound that’s becoming more difficult to find in such frenzied surroundings like these.

Can smart, dramatic lyrics with a challenging presentation keep frat boys and bikini-clad girls entertained at festivals where the party animals often are waiting for the next round of drinks instead of the next song?

Let’s hope so. At least, Ludwig-Leone sees endless musical possibilities because of the Internet.

“The way that the music business is set up, there’s so much music now with really diverse influences,” he said. “I think how things have kind of split up and become more varied, people are able to pull from wherever they want. For me, it just happens to be my musical training and my background just happens to have this mixture of stuff. I didn’t really set out to combine genres or anything like that. I just wanted to make music that felt honest to me.”

While Ludwig-Leone’s act of courage was truly hard to beat, there were four more subjects of Hangout hero worship worth writing home about:

Houndmouth Zak Appleby, Matt Myers

ROCK SOLID
Favorite acts were plentiful, led by Houndmouth, the rock-hard quartet from southern Indiana that was profiled here before the festival. Their March 2015 record, Little Neon Limelight, is one of the best of the year. The fearless foursome led by frontman Matt Myers in leopard-skin pants, a “Slippery When Wet” T-shirt and blue cape confirmed they belong among Americana’s best emerging artists (they have my vote) after a stunning show on the smallish BMI stage. With rousing numbers like “Black Gold” and “Sedona,” it was hard to pull away, but there was an L.A. woman calling from the Hangout stage.

Jenny Lewis guitar

Jenny Lewis was the epitome of a cool California girl walking on sunshine, showing off her fair-skinned legs, embracing the heat while giving a shout-out to the Mermaid Girl in the crowd and threatening to take a jump in what she called the ocean, even though those inviting waves were rolling in from the Gulf of Mexico. With Tristan Gaspadarek (keyboards) and Megan McCormick (guitar) in her stellar touring band, it was “Girl on Girl” power for Lewis, who introduced that new cut near the end of her set. She looked equally at ease as she strolled through songs from her solo career (“You Are What You Love,” “Love U Forever”) and her Rilo Kiley past (“A Better Son/Daughter”). She even bungled the opening to “Acid Tongue,” but laughed it off before leading her huddled singers in a beautiful rendition — followed by a dip into the “ocean.”

Meanwhile, emerging pop singers Halsey (top right) and Tove Lo (right) sounded terrific and looked fantastic and ready for the beach in modified swimwear, but could learn a thing or two from Lewis about taking the heat. Less than two minutes into “Castle” to open her early Friday afternoon set on the BMI stage, Halsey, a New Jersey-raised singer, exclaimed, “It’s hot as fuck up here!” Tove Lo, the sexy singer-songwriter from Sweden, had the crowd in the palm of her hand from the opening notes of “My Gun” on the massive Surf stage during a sweaty Sunday afternoon, and it didn’t hurt that she removed her skirt for a song or two (with swim apparel underneath), then flashed her boobs for one bright, shining moment.

Phantogram Sarah Barthel danceFive Knives Anna M'QueenELECTRONIC TONIC
A prime-time showing on the Palladia stage on Sunday night just before Beck’s swan songs felt just right for Phantogram, the electronic pop act powered by guitarist Josh Carter and keyboardist Sarah Barthel (left), the best-looking duo of the fest whose sweet, charming demeanor while taking selfies in the media tent hours before their set was an unexpected thrill. The strobe lights at dusk didn’t have the impact of their claustrophobic indoor show of the fall, but it made watching the breathtaking Barthel dancing the night away in skin-tight leather pants even easier on the eyes. And one listen to “Fall in Love” from 2014′s Voices will make one wonder why all electronic music can’t sound this wondrous.

On a somewhat more primitive level, Five Knives got the party started in the Boom Boom Tent early Friday afternoon during a punk-driven electro-pop set that was bolstered by the Nashville quartet who also were profiled in advance of the festival. Fronted by lead singer Anna M’Queen (left, bottom), a former punk rocker who still possesses that stage-diving moxie, and guitarist/programmer Nathan Barlowe, they want to bridge the gap that separates DJ dance tracks from power pop. With songs from their June 2 release Savages such as the title cut and “Oblivion,” expect that to happen sooner rather than later.
